The Malaysia Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (MAWAC) was officially launched in 2013. This year meeting was held on 18 Feb 2014 at MOA office chaired by YB Dato’Seri Ismail Sabri Bin Yaakob (Minister of Agriculture & Agro-based Industry). The meeting was attended by various Heads of Department, agencies, University Putra Malaysia and private sectors. The followings are the representations; Dato’Dr.Vincent Ng (President, VAM); Dr.Nadzariah Cheng (MSAVA); Dato’Dr.Nordin Mohd Noor (MNAWF); Dr.S.Sivagurunathan (MVC) and Prof Dr.Mohd Hair Bejo (Dean, UPM).
MAWAC is established as an interim measure before the formation of an Animal Welfare Board under the Animal Welfare Act. The aim is to handle issues related to animal welfare and the conditions in which it lives, including the 5 freedoms ( freedom from hunger, thirst & malnutrition; fear & distress; physical & thermal discomfort; pain; injury & disease; and freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour). This is in line with the aspiration of the country to be an industrial nation by Vision 2020 and its implementation of animal welfare strategic plan.
Good animal welfare requires disease prevention and veterinary treatment, appropriate shelter, management, nutrition, humane handling and humane slaughter / killing. The use of animals in agriculture and science, and for companionship, recreation and entertainment, makes a major contribution to the wellbeing of people. Therefore, the use of animals carries with it an ethical responsibility to ensure the welfare of such animal is taken care. The meeting discussed three main topics on the National Animal Welfare Strategic Plan, Animal Welfare Act and Report on the Animal Cruelty. The Hon. Minister also gave away letters of appointment to all the council members of MAWAC.
